with the celebrated return of dr. octagon (dan the automator, kool keith and dj qbert) in 2017 including their first-ever live performances fans are sure to keep gobbling up the space weirdness that first surfaced more than 20 years ago. get on down presents a unique picture disc, featuring the original octagon album artwork by the legendary artist pushead. the infamous doctor’s head and lower torso reach above and below the actual 45 rpm playing surface, as if trying to escape their two-dimensional status. on the a-side is a brand-new dr. octagon song, “octagon octagon,” which picks up where the original energy left off. it’s a dark and grooving glimpse into keith’s rubberband mind, jumping abstractly from line to line, chock full of equal partscharisma and dementia. on the flip is the song for which the group is most well-known, “blue flowers.” the version presented here is the amazing “prince paul’s so beautiful” remix, which first appeared on a mo wax 12” in the uk in late 1996. it was the first meeting of the two great production minds from different eras – dan the automator and prince paul would go on to collaborate many more times over the next decade, most notably as the group handsome boy modeling school. this is another great trophy for any self-respecting kool keith and dan the automator fan, combining the old and the new in triumphant fashion.

sterns edits returns after their well received and recently repressed amadou balake excursions, this time with ben gomori turning his hand to guinea for a third instalment in the series of re-works from the sterns music catalogue of african gems. balla et ses balladins were one of guinea s national orchestras formed as a result of the newly elected president, sekou toures authenticite policy of the early 1960s, which sought to promote guinea s cultural identity following independence from france in 1958. gomori takes the scalpel to two cuts recorded during their years on the state-run syliphone label, making good use of bandleader balla s lively trumpet playing. the gently haunting nyo is taken on a stomping slo-mo chug with a head-nodding bassline and stuttering fx creating a shimmering effect on the tropical guitars, while the rousing horns of wilikabo are laid over with rasping synth bass for a punchy juxtaposition. sterns edits is an official collaboration between african music stalwarts sterns music and london s ben gomori.

oddball space disco/fnk tracks, composed between 1970 and 1985. big tip! a master of the mixing board, from the late 60s until the 90s bernard estardy was the wizard of french musical recordings. as head of cbe studios, he shaped everything from gérard mansets concept albums to claude françois hit singles, françoise hardys delicate tear-jerkers and michel sardous soul-stirrers. this giant had his hand in the whole range of mainstream french music by making his studio a veritable playground for experimentation. his legendary album la formule du baron, released in 1969, and the eight lps of production music he made between 1974 and 1978 for tele music are vivid proof. in the cbe studio, which she runs today, his daughter julie estardy discussed his singular career.

a year on from luigi tozzi and label head dino sabatinis collaborative manticora ep, outis return with a striking, singular solo work from tozzi. ecate ep sees the roman producer bringing three distinct slices of techno, each with its own set of subtleties and the crystal, adept sound design that defines tozzi’s work. spanning the a-side is ecate. this title track is rolling and hypnotic, with muscular, percussive bass. throughout the track, angelic chords come and go, washing the listener in euphoria. alongside, we hear a disorienting melody, grounded by the lightly swung four to the floor kick that gives this track an infectious groove. the flip opens with leto, which immediately defines itself as a club track with an unbroken but evolving set of percussion and a weighty kick. its around this kick that other elements build. we hear long, ringing, resonant string sounds, and a bell like melody morph and unfold as other percussive components come and go. the track falls away into atmospheric eeriness, which perfectly sets the stage for the eps finale. esperedes swung, panning drums give it a disorienting feeling of otherworldliness from the get go. this is before youre greeted by an alien, slightly dubbed out melody and a hanting backing drone that feels like a reference (perhaps in opposition) to the angelic chords of the eps first track. its on this closing track that tozzis delicate, expert sound design best shines through, and really has to be heard to be understood.

first up, the 1986 ebm stomper -god save the king- by son of sam is revamped and reconstructed into a psychedelic rollercoaster of crashing cymbals, spiralling samples and bruising bars. the clock is being turned further back, this time belgium s new wave punk outfit arbeid adelt! are the source material with their 1987 track -help (me ik stik)- muscling up on a diet of raging rhythms and splintering guitar strings. the head honcho, juanpablo, meets up with an old member of the family dunkeltier (aka dj sneaker) to finish our journey. the pair travelling back to 1983 to catalonia and the prog-jazz musings of pegasus. -perseguido por el rayo- is tuned up and transformed into an electronic bomb. addictive grooves and hooks are polished with beats getting a shot in the arm for a hauntingly sinister piece of disco deviance.

mtd makes his debut on binary cells with -mokusha-. in this fourth vinyl episode, the italian based producer also known as sonntag morgen and methodical label head delivers three sophisticated gems designed for dancefloors, combining hypnotic bleeps, banging kicks and deeper textures. b2 also features a stunning remix from french craftsman birth of frequency.

having recently signed to brownswood recordings, announced via new track ‘i’ll be on your mind’, skinny pelembe’s first single proper for the london imprint, ‘spit / swallow’ spans pastoral pop, psychedelic textures and hip-hop-tipped, chopped and spliced guitar, interlacings samples with rolling drum breaks and echoed falsettos. b-side ‘toy shooter’ follows in similar fashion, bridging psych-rock exaltation with beat-head, synth-jamming production.
